For the last several years, we have commissioned a local artist to create the cover art for our holiday card. Friends, family, and colleagues have been a part of bringing to life the joy and spirit of the season for us.
A few years ago, we were introduced to Kevin H. Adams and his husband Jay Ward Brown by friends of ours. What started as a chance encounter at a restaurant has turned into many happy memories and shared occasions.
Kevin H. Adams was a talented painter who found inspiration in his homes in the majestic Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia and the coastal beauty of Cape Cod. Jay is a First Amendment attorney who works to protect the important role of the media and news outlets. Together, they have some of the best stories, ranging from Kevin’s time in the military and growing up sailing on the water, and Jay’s time in Minnesota, NYC, and failing his very first singing lesson as an aspiring actor. We adore our time together, around holiday tables, hiking through the mountains and dunes, and drinking wine and bourbon into late (for us 9pm) hours sharing stories.
Whether in his beautiful studio in Washington, Virginia or working in the light filled upper room of their home in Provincetown, Kevin captured the deep and passionate color palette and intricacies of whatever he was painting. We are fortunate to have a few of Kevin’s pieces in our own collection.
Sadly, in early summer of 2023, Kevin was diagnosed with a brain tumor and his journey in this life came to an abrupt end just a few short months later.
As we were thinking about an artist and medium for this year’s card, our immediate notion was to ask Jay if we might feature one of Kevin’s paintings for the card. Jay was moved and generously said yes. We are honored.
First Snow captures a peaceful snowfall in the rolling hills of Virginia. This scene creates a sense of calm and reminds us of the beauty all around.
May you find joy and peace and calm throughout this holiday season! We are grateful for you and the roles you play in our lives and our communities.
